MEET THE ARTIST

Elspeth is a Lancashire-based textile artist, working from a converted cowshed studio with wide views towards the Irish Sea.

Her love of making began early: drawing, painting, cutting paper, sewing clothes for dolls, and later making her own clothes and bags. Surrounded by a family of makers, she went on to study Fashion Textile Design at Brighton, specialising in woven textiles. Her work received several Royal Society of Arts awards, including a Travel Bursary.

Thread has always remained at the centre of her practice. Elspeth’s work brings together free-motion embroidery, appliqué, painting, drawing, dyeing and layers of unexpected fabric. She is drawn to the quiet detail of the natural world around her, translating colour, texture and memory into stitched pieces.

For many years, Elspeth created handmade embroidered greeting cards, sold throughout the UK, including at Harrods and Fortnum & Mason. Each began as an original textile artwork, designed and made in her Lancashire studio.

Since 2020, she has stepped away from large-scale production to return to a slower, more exploratory way of working. Her days are now spent painting, dyeing, stitching and experimenting — following ideas wherever they lead.

Her work is made with care, curiosity and a lifelong love of textiles.
