Birling Gap 4

W30cm x H80cm

This embroidery is the fourth in a series of five pieces in which I explored the atmosphere and character of the Sussex coastline.

My inspiration came from Birling Gap, where the meeting of sea and land reveals the quiet power of nature. Although the day I visited was calm, there was no mistaking the force of the sea. The towering white chalk cliffs, gradually worn away by the waves, and the great chalk boulders scattered across the dark shingle beach were constant reminders of the sea's strength.

As I developed this theme, I found myself refining not the view itself, but the feeling I wanted to convey. In this piece, colour, texture and layered stitching work together to express the movement of the water and the immense scale of the landscape. Rather than recording a particular moment, the embroidery reflects my lasting impression of standing on that shoreline, surrounded by the timeless conversation between land and sea.
