Birling Gap 5

This embroidery grew continued a series of studies exploring the coastline at Birling Gap in East Sussex. Created for a themed exhibition organised by the Embroiderers' Guild, it brought together many of the ideas I had been developing through the earlier pieces.

Although inspired by a photograph taken on a calm day, my intention was never simply to recreate the view. Instead, I wanted to convey the lasting impression of a coastline shaped by the relentless power of the sea. Layers of hand-painted fabrics, fibres and dense free-motion stitching build the movement of the water, while the dark beach anchors the composition beneath a vast sky.

The smooth grey chalk boulders, scattered across the shore, are a reminder of the famous white cliffs that tower just beyond the frame. Their softened tones contrast with the richly textured beach, suggesting the slow but unstoppable process of erosion that continually reshapes this remarkable landscape.

As with much of my work, the original photograph served only as a reminder. The embroidery became an exploration of memory, atmosphere and place, allowing colour, texture and stitch to express the feeling of standing on the beach far more than the literal scene itself.

Although I was pleased with the finished piece, I still see it as part of an ongoing journey. Each embroidery teaches me something new, and I hope one day to return to Birling Gap once again, with fresh ideas and a deeper understanding of the landscape that continues to inspire me.
