Galaxy 3 -IC2163
W18.5cm x H18.5cm
Textile embroidery inspired by the James Webb Space Telescope image of Galaxy IC2163.
Unlike my larger galaxy embroideries, this piece focuses on a single spiral, drawing the eye into its luminous centre. The sweeping bands of stitched colour suggest movement on an unimaginable scale, while the tiny layers of thread remind us that even the vastest structures are built from countless small parts.
Working on pieces like this is a form of quiet contemplation for me. The repetitive rhythm of stitching clears my mind, allowing me to become absorbed in the extraordinary beauty revealed by the James Webb Space Telescope. Although this galaxy lies millions of light years away, recreating it in textiles somehow makes it feel intimate and tangible.
I love the contrast between the immense scale of the universe and the simple, tactile nature of embroidery. Threads that pass through fabric one stitch at a time become swirling stars, dust and light. It is a reminder that we can connect with something unimaginably vast through the smallest of repeated actions.
For me, these works are about wonder rather than science. They invite us to pause, to look more closely, and to remember that we are part of something far greater than ourselves. Rather than making me feel insignificant, that thought brings a sense of peace and perspective.
