Galaxy 7 Abstract Supernova

Original textile embroidery inspired by the energy and beauty of stellar explosions.

Unlike my embroideries based on specific galaxies, this piece is entirely imagined. Inspired by the extraordinary colours and forms revealed by modern astronomy, I wanted to create my own vision of a supernova—an immense burst of energy and light, interpreted through thread and fabric.

Rather than focusing on scientific accuracy, I was interested in capturing a sense of movement, radiance and creation. Layers of stitching spread outwards from a dark central core, suggesting an explosion that is both powerful and beautiful. The colours shift through turquoise, violet, pink and gold, transforming what might be imagined as a violent event into something luminous and life-affirming.

This embroidery was made instinctively and with great enjoyment. Sometimes it is refreshing to leave observation behind and simply allow colour, texture and stitch to lead the way. Although inspired by the universe, this piece is more about imagination than representation.

Like the rest of my galaxy series, it reflects my fascination with the immense scale of the cosmos. Looking into space reminds me how small we are, yet instead of diminishing us, I find that thought deeply comforting. Against the vastness of the universe, everyday worries become lighter, leaving room for curiosity, wonder and peace.
