This embroidery was inspired by a walk at Snook Beach on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, where the landscape seemed to stretch endlessly beneath an immense northern sky.
Although the sea lay quietly on the horizon, it was the wide expanse of moorland and the tall grasses that held my attention. They swayed constantly in the breeze, sometimes so high that I repeatedly lost sight of my husband as we walked together, adding a touch of humour to an otherwise peaceful afternoon.

What has stayed with me most, however, is the atmosphere of that place. The scent of salt air mingled with the earthy smell of wet sand and marsh, while the vast, empty landscape, with scarcely another person in sight, conveyed a profound sense of space and solitude.

Rather than depicting the coastline in detail, I wanted to capture the feeling of standing within it—surrounded by wind, light and open sky, and reminded once again of my own small place in the scale of the natural world.
