Snowy Lane
W 20 cm x H 26 cm
Looking out from my front door after heavy snowfall, Snowy Lane captures the quiet transformation of an ordinary country lane into a monochrome winter landscape. Deep snow blankets the ground while bare branches reach upwards, their tangled forms standing stark against the dark winter sky. Faint footprints and the tracks of a determined vehicle hint at the few who ventured out into the cold.
Created using free-motion machine embroidery, hand couching, needle felting and layered wool fibres, the piece combines richly textured surfaces with loose, expressive stitching. The contrast between the dense, soft snow and the energetic lines of the trees reflects both the stillness and the hidden vitality of winter.
Although inspired by a familiar view from my own home, this work is less about recording a particular place than conveying the atmosphere of a snowbound day—the muffled silence, the crisp air, and the invitation to stay indoors while the landscape waits beneath its white covering.
