Living halfway down a Lancashire hillside, I am fortunate to enjoy wide views towards the coast, where dramatic weather often transforms the evening sky. This piece is part of my Stormy Sunset series, inspired by those fleeting moments when heavy clouds begin to part and the last light of the day breaks through.

Rather than depicting a specific place, I wanted to capture the atmosphere of an approaching storm giving way to unexpected colour. Layers of machine embroidery, fibres and stitched textures create a soft, hazy surface, allowing the glowing band of orange, coral and gold to emerge gradually from the surrounding greys and silvery blues.

The quiet foreground echoes the stillness of the landscape beneath the changing sky, while the richly textured surface reflects the constantly shifting light and weather that make these sunsets so memorable.

This embroidery is less about recording a view than preserving the feeling of standing still for a few moments, watching an ordinary evening become extraordinary.
