Weaving Wall Hanging

This piece occupies a special place in the Stormy Sunset series because it brings together two important parts of my textile life—my love of weaving and my lifelong enjoyment of embroidery.

The composition is constructed from handwoven samples that I created many years ago while studying weave. Rather than leaving them as technical exercises, I revisited them, arranging the woven strips into a layered abstract landscape inspired by the dramatic stormy sunsets seen from my home in Lancashire. The bands of colour suggest heavy clouds, glowing horizons and the quiet land beneath an evening sky.

Creating this piece also became a personal tribute to my college tutor, who had always encouraged me to combine my weaving with embroidery. Throughout my studies he believed the two disciplines belonged together, and not long before I made this piece, he sadly passed away. Returning to these woven samples and giving them a new purpose felt like completing a conversation we had begun years earlier.

Although abstract in form, Stormy Sunset 4 is rooted in memory—of landscape, of learning, and of the people who quietly shape the direction of our creative lives.
