Stormy Sunset 5 (W58cm x H47.5cm)

The fifth in a series exploring the changing moods of the sky, this embroidery was inspired by an evening when a day of storm clouds gave way to an extraordinary display of light.

For much of the day, the sky had been heavy with dark, ominous clouds. Then, as evening approached, the sun broke through beneath them, transforming the horizon into brilliant bands of orange and gold. The contrast between the deep greys of the storm and the sudden intensity of the light was unforgettable, and for a few fleeting moments the sky seemed almost striped with colour.

Rather than describing the landscape itself, I wanted to capture that overwhelming sense of standing beneath a vast sky, aware of my own small place within it. The layered stitching and restrained palette allow the glowing threads of light to become the focus, expressing both the drama and the fleeting beauty of a moment that nature created and then quietly reclaimed.
