Stormy Sunset 6

38 × 49 cm (unframed)

The sixth piece in my Stormy Sunset series explores the moment when the last light of day burns beneath an overwhelming sky. Inspired by the panoramic view from my home overlooking the Lancashire landscape towards the distant sea, it captures one of those evenings when storm clouds gather in towering layers while the sunset refuses to disappear quietly.

This embroidery is built almost entirely through layered appliqué and machine stitching, creating rich surfaces that echo shifting cloud formations and the changing textures of the landscape. Bands of glowing orange, crimson and gold are compressed beneath deep charcoal and violet skies, producing a striking contrast between warmth and darkness.

Rather than depicting the scene literally, I wanted to convey the emotional experience of standing still and watching nature perform its evening drama. The weight of the approaching storm is balanced by the resilience of the remaining light, creating a sense of tension, atmosphere and quiet anticipation.

Like the other works in the series, this piece celebrates the extraordinary sunsets that have become a constant source of inspiration. Although rooted in a particular place, it is intended to evoke the universal experience of finding beauty in fleeting moments of changing weather and light. Although this is currently the final piece in the series, the changing skies continue to inspire new ideas, and another Stormy Sunset is already waiting to be made.
